As you&#8217;ll notice, the list got away from us! It has become a brain dump of the dysfunctions we\u2019ve observed in various IT environments along our coaching careers. We also added a few tongue-in-cheek items \ud83d\ude09<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/agilepartnership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/brokenGears.gif\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1138 aligncenter\" alt=\"brokenGears\" src=\"http:\/\/agilepartnership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/brokenGears.gif\" width=\"386\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Top signs you work in a dysfunctional IT environment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Individuals are identified the same way as a printer: as resources<\/li>\n<li>Face to face communication is considered redundant if a document is available<\/li>\n<li>A mistake is noted and regurgitated during the annual performance review.<\/li>\n<li>A certification is the first measure of competence, but actual competence is a close second.<\/li>\n<li>The manager keeps saying, \u201cthe team needs to change\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>When the team moves into the Storming phase, disciplinary measures are taken.<\/li>\n<li>The Architect or Team Lead decides how long something will take.<\/li>\n<li>Doing more in less time is seen as a cool challenge and motivational tool by management.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGenerate more revenue\u201d or \u201cdestroy the competition\u201d are part of the Mission Statement.<\/li>\n<li>Looks and business clothes are promoted over innovative ideas.<\/li>\n<li>The analytical introverts are crushed by the driving extroverts.<\/li>\n<li>Management laughs at developers who dream of working at Google someday.<\/li>\n<li>Status quo is the strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Overheard: He\u2019s not complacent. He\u2019s a good team player.<\/li>\n<li>Overheard: There is no place for emotions in business.<\/li>\n<li>The EQ test application crashed trying to generate a negative value.<\/li>\n<li>Your manager looks the other way when you pass him in the hallway.<\/li>\n<li>Technical debt is taken care of by maintenance because the project has to stay on budget.<\/li>\n<li>Cubicle farms here, there, everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s called happy hour when really it&#8217;s denial, lay blame, justify, and shame hour.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Management loves to quote passages from \u201cThe Principles of Scientific Management\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Soft skills training for management???<\/li>\n<li>The project manager reassures the client that <em>everything<\/em>\u00a0will be delivered on budget and on time.<\/li>\n<li>Big visible charts are taken down because it doesn\u2019t look \u201cprofessional\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The less you code, the better you are paid.<\/li>\n<li>To get your idea across to another silo, you need to go up the food chain until the VPs of each silo talk to each other.<\/li>\n<li>Coders are seen as the bottom of the food chain.<\/li>\n<li>In the hallway you often hear, \u201conly 2 more days before the weekend\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFun\u201d is what you do at the country club. You work at the office.<\/li>\n<li>Meetings extend their time boxes. Decisions are never made. No accountability.<\/li>\n<li>Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs) are seen as irresponsible.<\/li>\n<li>Transparency feels like rubbing alcohol\u00a0on a open wound.<\/li>\n<li>The Director spreads Agile in every team like fairy dust.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What have you observed?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since this is our first attempt at a collaborative post, Louis-Philippe Carignan and I decided to keep it small and simple by writing a top 10 list.
